Can I move my PC Data Backups account to another computer?
PC Data Backups accounts can be moved to any computer running a supported Windows OS/NOS.
- Be sure to print out the account information before you begin.
- To view your encryption key if your PC Data Backups software is running, click on the
Options Menu, select Security…, and
click View Encryption Key.
- To print your encryption key, click the Print button. Change number of copies
to 2. Click OK. Storethe printout copies in two separate,
safe locations.
- Disable the old account - that is, stop any automatic backups from running - and be sure to delete it later! So it does not
interfere with account on the new computer. Warning: You cannot have the same account active on
more than one PC! – Neither computer will backup!)
- You will then want to go to the PC Data Backups website (pcdatabackups.com), find the backup program that is the
same as the current account, and run the program installation from there.
- Choose "re-establish an existing account" rather than create a new account when prompted during the installation and
setup process.
- You will need to provide the old account number and encryption key.
- Verify the scheduled settings. (They should be unchanged.)
- Retrieve any data that you may need as soon as possible, before running new backups. (The new backups will overwrite the
old data.)
- It is best to create a unique folder for the retrieved data on the root of the "C:" drive. For example C:\Restore,
place the recovered data here and chose the option to retain original file structure during the retrieve.
- Go to Backup View, Explore to pick files and verify the data to be backed on the new computer is correct. (You may need
to make changes.)
- The backups are now set to run on this computer.
- Uninstall the software from the original computer. >Control Panel >Add or Remove Programs >PC Data Backups
